Lack of Updating

Sadly, I haven't been very active in taking pictures over the past year. I bought a nice DSLR last summer thinking that I'd be inspired to take more pictures, but it turns out, I wasn't. I just got back from Europe last week where I made a stop in Vienna and stopped by the Leica Shop and museum and had the temptation to buy a Leica M6, a camera I've dreamed of owning for the past few years. In the end, I couldn't justify spending a few thousand dollars on a camera when I had only taken 3 rolls of film in 2 weeks. It just wouldn't have made sense.

Lately I've been pondering my whole attraction to photography, questioning it's foundations and speculating on it's payoffs. I've wondered about what my end goal has been, is it to share my perspective, or to document my life, or is it to do something creative that I can be proud of when I hang a nicely framed photo on the wall? I think it's a combination of these things really. I've also struggled with my current environment, Toronto. I've always relied on being somewhere inspiring as a source of motivation to snap photos and when I lived in San Francisco and (briefly) Boston, it was easy to pick up the camera on any day, wander around and try to get great shots of the city. Toronto just doesn't do it for me though and this probably explains while a single roll of film sat in my Canon F1-N for nearly 8 months until I recently revisited San Francisco.
